Being raised as a reform Jew has given me a complicated and somewhat confusing upbringing. Simultaneously being enmeshed in traditional Jewish and secularized American culture has made me feel a stranger to both cultures. Because of a fear of antisemitism, I mostly practice my religion in secret and it almost feels as if being Jewish is my secret identity. Through my thesis, I intend to explore the different facets of my upbringing as an American Reform Jewish person as well as the general Jewish American experience. Such as: the lack of assimilation as a Jewish person into American Society and the fear of expressing Jewishness openly. Ultimately, I intended to create an awareness of the lack of Jewish assimilation in American culture through my work.
