Cities around the world are becoming less aromatic as they continue to modernise and expand their urban landscapes, resulting in feelings that we are not only disconnected from each other but the natural world around us. Various cultures throughout history have used aroma and dining for ritualistic practices, connecting them more to their deities, food source, and environment. Scent can be meditative for its psychological effects and to help heal ecological grief. This project focuses on the transformative potential of layered and complex scents. Contrasting to fast visual stimulations, my project asks people to slow down and experience scent as a way of communicating, to be more mindful and intentional in their daily lives. How can we understand more nuance through our sense of smell compared to sight? Do we value something more if we can only experience it in an embodied way? How can we use scent, its various effects on the brain (memory and happiness), and the personal and subjective mental images formed to strengthen human connection as well as contemplation? Through researching the history of scent and food rituals, as well as spiritual connections to both, and by making with the method of research through design, I created a metaphorical dining experience in the form of an installation. Using the maceration method, I developed 12 scents reflecting deities and significant elements from various cultures. Inviting participants to interact with the scents captured in bowls, the project uses scent as a tool for more awareness and mindfulness.
