Coming into this project, I had a lot of thoughts about craft-making, specifically knitting and crochet. I myself am a lover of yarn and fiber arts, but I was initially taught how to knit and crochet by my mother and grandmother, who are from the Dongbei region of China. It gets brutally cold there in the wintertime, so they would knit sweaters and pants in the summer and fall for the winter, and in the spring, they would unravel their knits to wash and reuse the yarn for the following season. I wanted to make something that reflected upon craft-making as a way of living and as an artform: how it’s a matrilineal tradition, or a tradition that is passed down by women, how it can be cyclical and ritualistic in many ways, how it can be a more sustainable way of living and creating, and how it creates a great sense of community. I created my own world that explored all of these ideas. The Isle of Yarn is about a society of women who live in harmony with one another and with nature, specifically these magical giant angora bunnies whose wool they harvest to spin into yarn, with which they create their homes and clothing. However, the isle is at risk due to enemy invaders who are hunting the rabbits to sell their pelts. This world is a celebration of womanhood and craft-making and a cautionary tale about the abuse of resources and mistreatment of nature
