Stemming from the habits formed in the digital age, where a generation has become interested in audio-visual stimulation and efficient synthesis of information, an interest in reading seems to be lost. This project explores strategies to bring back the sense of enthusiasm that people once held for reading. To gain a better understanding of how people view and interact with reading for both entertainment and work, the research employs secondary materials, as well as auto-ethnography and cultural probes for a group ranging from the ages of 17 to 22. The results indicate that although reading for pleasure allows for increased focus and interest, within a 30-minute reading session, internal and external distractions were still prevalent, such as internal thoughts, sounds in the environment, phone (notifications, checking social media, etc.), and conversations. It appears that the closer the content of a written piece is to being short form and entertainment, the more engaged the reader is with the contents. The first part of the project is an animated narrative called “I Tried to Read” with stories of the reading experiences based on auto-ethnographic observations and cultural probes. The second part presents a series of interventions for both physical and digital reading mediums called “Monotony”. These experiments combine mundane and seemingly uninteresting text I wrote with designs that challenge the traditional presentations of text to play with ideas of typographic styles, physical format, and interactivity through an “unbook” in order to shift away from the traditional experience of reading and to make our impatience when experiencing less stimulating content prevalent.
