How have classic video game advertisements influenced me and the culture of that time era? I embarked on this project to do something I've wanted to do since I started studying at Pratt. My favorite pastime is playing video games, either made recently or older than me. The games considered the foundation of gaming as we know it is the era I wanted to research more; I didn't desire to make something through an academic lens. When I was a kid the way to find out about new games was through comic books, magazines, and sometimes the odd game manual. With this memory still prevalent, I wanted to recreate the feeling of flipping through wacky, cool, strange, and often goofy advertisements that sell an exaggerated experience of what the game really is. Pinterest became my primary tool for gathering ads from the late '70s up until the mid-2000s. Websites like Archive.org helped find game manuals to pull inspiration from their design and size. I also had my own archive of comics to refer to, along with being in close proximity to a few sources for retro video games that aided in my research. What I found through my time designing, documenting, and ripping into decades of advertisements is that selling the idea is sometimes more important than the quality of the product. How they are able to keep avoiding this problem is troubling but they weren't covering up the cheeky nature of the beast, these ads embraced it; honestly was great to feel that sensation of flipping through those saturated pages.
