Paper has always been in my childhood as a material itself with endless fascinating properties and that is why ever since I had been exposed to pop-up engineering here at Pratt, I have fallen in love with the subject. But, for the last two years I have faced a dilemma of not feeling confident enough in my skills to combine pop-up and my artwork into a cohesive whole. So, this semester for my thesis, I’ve decided to create a whole pop-up book to tackle that fear in hopes of pushing through that fear and designing spreads that will smoothly tell a story in an organic way. For my book, I've decided to make the story about a greek myth, The Abduction of Persephone and retell it by drawing upon earlier interpretations of the story to make Persephone into the heroine of her own story instead of a powerless damsel. The illustrations will be done in a stylized, semi-realistic art style that incorporates strong decorative elements. At the end of this semester, I hope to have created a full pop-up book as well as improving my own confidence in abilities as an artist.
