Pink Pasts

Illustration

For as long as I can remember, I have been obsessed with the color pink—it permeates every aspect of my life. However, despite its huge influence on me, I never discerned how this adoration came about. As time went on and more and more people asked me “why pink?”, I, too, started to wonder “why pink?” Pink Pasts is an introspection into the significance that a seemingly dull subject, the color pink, has played in my life. How have certain experiences played out in the context of this persistent presence? The illustrated exploration shows the shade’s indiscriminate nature—the color has stained all types of life experiences, including the good, the bad, the dramatic, and the tedious. Each piece in the series is guided by a different keyword and corresponding memories, including obsession, love, control, heartbreak, adventure, and self.

The pink in my life is not necessarily most present in what can be seen or held. It has permeated experiences of love, longing, joy, sadness, questioning, celebration, and more. For me, pink has not just been a pretty hue of feminine sweetness, but truly a reflection of life and all of its mysteries.
