Growing up less than a mile from a ski resort I’ve always had some involvement in the snowsports industry. At the age of 5 or 6 I started snowboarding, and to this day I’ve continued that hobby. Some of the first illustrations that I noticed and became familiar with were on snowboard decks. As I grew into myself and began to explore artistically I found that I was continuously drawn back towards art in this context. Unique artist collaborations, humor, and intense detail were all present in snowboard graphics and they all influenced where I would go as an artist.

Now as I near the end of my career as a student of Illustration I found it fitting to return to this early inspiration. Having learned so much and developed my own mark, I think it was an important exploration of something as commercially produced and branded as snowboard graphics.

This project began with tracing the history of snowboard graphics back to their creation in the ’s, while also drawing parallels to other industries that employ a similar focus such as skateboard graphics.

While looking back on my own experiences and using my current artistic mark worked to recontextualize myself. I tend to combine handmade and traditional work with a digital influence. I drew the linework of the boards by hand and digitally colored the pieces. I also created a small process book detailing my efforts.
