The word Comparucci is an Italian slang term my father has been using for years. It means family beyond blood, and I hear it at every toast, every party, every dinner. This book is a deep exploration of my family and the ways in which stories and histories change and develop over time as they are told and retold. I am an amalgam of all of these people and stories so the book is meant to feel the same way, with elements from the past and present all mashed together. The book includes artifacts from my family including clothing, fabric, jewelry, and photos as well as a series of self portraits in which I embody different members of my family, a series of garments I made from handkerchiefs and scrap fabric saved by my family members for years, and other portraits focusing on the ways we visualize stories when we are children.
